Clowning Around
Jun24
This is a true fear of mine. It developed a month or so ago after seeing the movie scary movie “VCR”, though the movie itself has nothing to do with clowns.
And honestly, it’s not the clown that scares me so much of the mask, those creepy creepy latex masks. I’ve always been taken aback by them and not quite sure how to interact with people wearing them (my brain kinda shuts down and forgets that they are people, it’s weird).
Also, in case you missed it yesterday, check out this week’s “Name This PC” contest and name a poor Nameless PC for the price of just one internet comment.
So faithful readers, what are your irrational fears? or rational ones for that matter!
Blame Stephen King on this one.
Little people… I can watch them on tv, but I am turned into nerves nelly when they are near in real life. Idk why. I know there is no danger but my fear just takes over.
It is an entirely human fear. Actually, fear of zombies, clowns, the handicapped, porcelain dolls, and the “uncanny valley” effect all stem from the same basic instinct. We are hardwired to avoid things that look like human beings but where there is something visibly “wrong” “off” or “incorrect” about them. It helps prevent the spread of disease, among other biological benefits (or so some theorize). So, it is a perfectly human (if embarrasing) instinct. I, myself, have a great deal of difficulty around folks who are visibly mentally handicapped. I do not act on it or judge because of it, but there is a discomfort I have never quite been able to shake that I have to work hard to control.
